Controlled-atmosphere lines

The Aichelin line

The line has a gas-fired main furnace, an electric preheating and tempering furnace, and a washer. Both the main furnace and the preheating furnace have roof-mounted circulation fans that even out the temperature and atmosphere, so the treated parts come out with more uniform properties.

In the quench tank, powerful agitators keep the oil moving during the quench so that no vapour layer stays on the parts.

The Wellman furnace

This furnace has similar features to the Aichelin line, but it is electrically heated. Eurotherm and Honeywell controllers, two thermocouples and an oxygen probe control the furnace temperature and atmosphere continuously, and the furnace runs the whole heat-treatment cycle on its controllers and timers.

Vacuum furnaces

In our Schmetz and Abar vacuum furnaces we harden, temper and stress relieve tool steels and dies. We also solution treat and age nickel superalloys in these furnaces.

Parts are quenched with nitrogen gas at a controllable cooling rate. The Schmetz furnace can blow the cooling gas onto the load from two directions, and the quench intensity can be changed during the cycle.

Thermocouples mounted on the part itself record its surface and core temperatures throughout the cycle.

Supporting equipment and laboratory

Endothermic gas generators
We run two generators that crack natural gas over a catalyst bed around the clock, producing the endothermic gas that controls the carbon potential in the controlled-atmosphere furnaces. Type R thermocouples and Honeywell controllers control the generator temperature.
Sub-zero treatment unit
For cooling hardened parts below zero, to transform retained austenite into martensite. More about sub-zero treatment
Shot-blast machines
We have two machines, a tumble shot-blast machine and a rotary-table shot-blast machine, for cleaning and descaling parts and introducing compressive stress at their surface. More about shot blasting
Metallurgy laboratory
A MEIJI optical microscope with up to 1000× magnification, five hardness-testing methods, and mounting and polishing equipment for sample preparation. Laboratory tests
